The ADU Permitting Process, Step by Step

Homeowners rarely worry about permitting until they are in it. Knowing the general sequence makes the waiting far less stressful, and it helps you plan around the parts that genuinely take time.

The ADU Permitting Process, Step by Step

The typical sequence

Every municipality runs its own process, but most ADU projects follow a recognizable path.

  • Zoning review — confirming the unit type, size and placement
  • Septic or sewer approval where a system change is involved
  • Building permit application with stamped plans as required
  • Trade permits for electrical, plumbing and mechanical
  • Inspections through construction, ending with a certificate of occupancy

What usually slows things down

Incomplete applications, septic design review, engineering revisions and municipal review queues are the common causes of delay. None of them are unusual — they just need to be anticipated instead of discovered.

Who handles it

Permitting is part of our scope. We prepare the applications, respond to review comments and coordinate with your town so you are not the one chasing a submission through three departments.
